A cap with your own words on it does one job: it says something for you every time you leave the house. That's worth a few minutes of thought. Here are the questions to ask yourself before you order, with the real sizes and timings of our Custom Cap.
1. Start with the words
Short lines work best. Two or three words read from across the street; a long sentence turns into a blur of thread. Say it out loud: if it takes more than one breath, cut it. A few starting points: an inside joke only your friends get, a polite refusal, your one rule for the weekend, a name.
On the Custom Cap the embroidery can be up to 7 cm wide and 5 cm tall. In that space a single word can be big and bold; four or five words go on two lines and get smaller.
2. Pick a font
The font changes the tone of a line more than you'd think. There are three:
- Script, as on "Good People Drink Good Wine": soft, a little tongue-in-cheek, good for longer lines.
- Serif, as on "leave me alone.": dry, like something typed on an old typewriter.
- Classic capitals: clean and readable from far away, best for one or two words.
3. Cap colour
The Custom Cap is 100% cotton and comes in navy, black and khaki. Navy and black go with everything and make a light embroidery stand out. Khaki is warmer and gives your words a more vintage feel.
4. Size and fit
It's a dad hat: a soft, unstructured, low-profile baseball cap. One size fits 54 to 60 cm, adjustable at the back, so you don't need to know someone's head size to give it as a gift.
5. Timing
Every Custom Cap is embroidered to order. After you check out we email you to confirm the text, font and any notes, and only then do we start. It takes about 5 working days to make, then it ships. If it's a gift for a specific date, plan for that.
6. Care
Machine wash on a gentle 30 °C cycle and let it air dry. The embroidery stays put; just keep it out of the tumble dryer.
